MOORS, Edward Salisbury

Edward Salisbury Moors was born in Birkenhead in 1870 to John Moors and Elizabeth Hughes. In the 1871 census John Moors occupation was given as ‘Iron Moulder’. By 1875 the family had moved to Anglesey where a second son, William Samuel was born in 1875. The family lived in Llanrhyddlad, five miles from Holyhead, and the birthplace of Elizabeth Moors. In the 1881 census Elizabeth was living in Llanrhyddlad with her eighty year old widowed mother and the two children, and though she said she was married, John was not present. Elizabeth died in 1889 and a family story has it that John took the boys to the United States, though this has not been confirmed.

Edward married Mary Richards in 1895 in Holyhead and they lived in Henry Street in the town. Between then and 1916 they had eleven children, two of them dying in infancy. In 1901 he was employed as a Labourer with the railway company in Holyhead and in October 1902 he began employment with the City of Dublin Steam Packet Co as a Seaman. Later he was a Fireman / Stoker, his position in the 1911 Census when he was recorded on RMS Connaught in Kingstown harbour. The family was then living in Ucheldre Avenue in Holyhead. In 1918, at the age of forty-eight, he was employed as an ‘Engineers’ Steward’ on the mailboats. They were then living in Edmund Street.

Edward Moors did not survive the sinking of RMS Leinster on the 10th of October 1918, nor was his body recovered. However, his name is recorded on the family grave in Maeshyfryd cemetery, on the memorial plaque in Hyfrydle chapel in Holyhead and on the War Memorial in the town. He received the Mercantile Marine Medal and the British War Medal. His widow, Mary, died in 1950 aged seventy-eight.
